Policy Shield
Student Rights Handout
What every Nigerian higher institution student is legally entitled to, summarised for quick reference.
1. Admission & Retention
No higher institution in Nigeria (Federal, State, or Private) can deny you entry, suspend, or expel you because of a positive HIV classification. Retaliatory expulsions are unlawful under Section 21 of the HIV/AIDS Anti-Discrimination Act of 2014.
2. Medical Confidentiality
Your campus clinical records are strictly protected. Doctors, nurses, and lab scientists at your campus clinic are legally required to guard your diagnostic details. Leakages to lecturers, hostel wardens, or colleagues can result in licensing termination.
3. Exam & Project Extensions
If physical fatigue, clinical onboarding side-effects, or mental stress impact your exam schedules, you are entitled to seek official medical course extensions or temporary deferment through your department without disclosing private diagnoses publicly.
4. Free Care Integration
Under the 2026 National Health Guidelines, public and federal clinics must serve as cost-free distribution centres for antiretroviral therapy (ART), PrEP regimes, and standard viral count reviews. Any illegal levy demands should be logged with support groups.
How to Document Violations
If you experience discrimination on campus, have had your medical privacy breached by health centre personnel, or have been threatened with disciplinary action due to status details, please compile:
- Timestamps: The exact date, hour, and academic semester the exchange occurred.
- Witnesses: Students or coordinators who observed the discriminatory conversation.
- Written materials: Letters, text messages, status verification demands, or emails from administrative channels.
